It can be helpful, if you feel comfortable, if you are able to give us some details, such as:

- Who else is involved?  For example, if you have a dispute with your ex partner, we will need to know their name so that we can check for any conflicts of interest.  If your case is about parenting, we will also need to know how many children you have, their ages or any special needs that they have.

- The timeline: When did you first start your relationship with the other person? Is this your first time  seeing a lawyer because you have recently separated (or are thinking about it), or is this a historic issue that needs to be updated because something has changed?  If so, when did you separate and when did the current agreement or Court Order start?

- Is it urgent? Are you, your children or another person unsafe?  You may be worried about a family member's ability to care for themselves, or their children; or you might believe you need a Protection Order.

- The professionals:  Are there other lawyers involved, social work agencies, Oranga Tamariki or Women's Refuge?

- The property:  Is there a home or business involved, if so - who is recorded as the legal owner?  Are there debts or a mortgage associated with it?
